What's in the word countThere are always so many questions about the word limit. The IB clearly state, students must produce a portfolio of three commentaries. Each commentary must not exceed 750 words.
|
what topics?Each commentary is based on different sections of the syllabus, e.g. IA1 will be on microeconomics, IA2 will be on macroeconomics, and it is likely that IA3 will be on international economics.
what sources?Students must use a different source for each commentary, e.g. you can use the BBC website once.
is old news ok?The piece of news you choose to use, should be less than one year old at the time of writing your commentary.
teacher help?To quote the IB, “Teachers can give advice to students on a first draft of the internally assessed work. This advice should be in terms of the way the work could be improved, but this first draft must not be heavily annotated or edited by the teacher. The next version handed to the teacher after the first draft must be the final one.”
diagrams?You should make them. Use paint or PowerPoint, the best are hand drawn and scanned. Do not copy and paste from the internet. All your diagrams should follow the same style and format across the whole portfolio.

is there a marking criteria?For each commentary the marks are awarded for;
Then the whole portfolio (all three commentaries) is given an extra mark out of 3. These are for the rubric requirements. That is;
Therefore the maximum mark for the portfolio is 45 marks (14 marks x 3 commentaries) + 3 marks = 42 +3 marks |
What are the grade boundaries?In the past the following grade boundaries have been used.
